Baseboards that are cracked or peeling paint are indicative of a home that hasn’t been taken care of well, while those that are in good condition show signs of regular cleaning and upkeep.
If you see any areas that are outright missing baseboards, that’s a definite sign of neglect and you should be wary of putting in an offer on the home.
While there are certain home systems you shouldn’t be messing with during a home tour, water pressure is one thing you can quickly and easily check. Simply turn on all the faucets in the house, both upstairs and down, and see how long it takes for the water to reach its full force.
If the water pressure is good throughout the house, that’s a good sign that the plumbing system is in good working order. However, if the water pressure is weak or takes a long time to reach full force, that could be a sign of bigger problems with the plumbing.
Even if it’s not finished, the basement can tell you a lot about the quality of a home. A musty smell or evidence of water damage are both big red flags, while a clean and well-maintained basement is a good sign that the homeowners take pride in their home.
While you should never actually be switching anything on or off during a home tour, you can quickly check to see if the fuse box or circuit breakers are in good condition. If they’re labeled properly and don’t show any signs of rust or wear, that’s a good sign.
However, if they’re outdated or in poor condition, that could be a sign of bigger electrical problems. If you’re really concerned, you can always ask your real estate agent to have the home inspected by a professional before you put in an offer.
